PUBLIC ART INSTALLATION: BOUNDARY

An exploration into how our role as designers can help initiating interactive dialogues between city dwellers and policymakers.

Boundary attempts to raise awareness on an issue that has long posted challenge on the development of our city at a systemic level. Oftentimes the rigid orders stated in the government’s paperwork and the reality of human interaction towards objects and the surroundings are inconsistent; it can lead to a stalemate that hinders sustainable growth. Therefore, for this installation we physicalized the jurisdictional matrix (represented by blue nylon rope) of one city agency and overlaid it on a 1,800-square-meter public market in the City of Bangkok. Although this concept is installed at one location, this seemingly unnatural relationship between the rigidity of jurisdictional matrix and the fuzziness of human interaction appears to be a natural phenomenon across the city.

The blue nylon rope was selected as the material of choice due to its ubiquity and affordability. A decision was made to allocate funding the way that would benefit the lives of the workers rather than spending the majority of it on materials.

This art installation opened for viewing on February 4, 2023, as part of Bangkok Design Week 2023. It remained on display until the market was closed for demolition to make way for a new market in mid-2023. Market sellers, customers, and visitors were invited to share their visions on the future of our public markets. At the end of the installation the blue rope became free for anybody to repurpose.

ความไม่สอดคล้องและไม่เป็นธรรมชาติระหว่างขอบเขตในพื้นที่กายภาพกับขอบเขตในงานเอกสาร คือหนึ่งในจุดเริ่มต้นของข้อจำกัดในกระบวนการพัฒนาพื้นที่ทางกายภาพ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการสร้างวิสัยทัศน์ใหม่ หรือแก้ปัญหาเดิมที่มีความสัมพันธ์ทางสังคมที่ซับซ้อนของมนุษย์มาโดยตลอด งานศิลปะชิ้นนี้ต้องการนำเสนอการมีอยู่ของขอบเขตทางงานเอกสารที่มองไม่เห็นให้ปรากฏขึ้นเป็นอย่างรูปธรรมทางกายภาพ ผ่านการสร้างภาพซ้อนของปริมาตรตลาดรัชดาภิเษกขึ้นมา เพื่อให้ผู้พบเห็นสามารถรับรู้ถึงเส้นแบ่งขอบเขตความรับผิดชอบอันชัดเจนในงานเอกสาร ซ้อนไปกับความคลุมเครือตามธรรมชาติของพื้นที่กายภาพและพฤติกรรมมนุษย์บริเวณนั้น
