This gut renovation for the Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy at Chulalongkorn University integrates three distinct academic programs into a cohesive, agile workplace. Centered on the concept of “Subtle Elegance,” the project serves as the faculty’s interface to the world, reflecting the institution’s vision through a refined user experience.
To materialize this concept, the design redefines the workspaces as a “habitable archive,” where user well-being intersects with efficiency. While the shift toward paperless data management reduces the need for storage rooms, varied, small-scale storage solutions are integrated into the peripheral acoustic walls, providing convenient access to resources from every workstation. This approach maximizes floor area while enhancing the acoustic and thermal comfort of the interior.
Moreover, to accommodate a diverse user base—ranging from students, parents, and administrative staff to visiting scholars, professors, and deans—the layout is zoned into private, semi-private, and public areas. By studying the requirements for all programs collectively, the design utilizes strategically placed public and internal corridors to eliminate cross-circulation between transient visitors and staff, preserving the concentration and security levels necessary for each area. This layout also introduces a shared recreational space that internally connects the offices and acts as a catalyst for spontaneous interdisciplinary encounters among staff, cultivating a sense of community within.
